Summary of Boilermaker

A boilermaker is an industrial tradesman who carries out various industrial jobs including building, erection, repair and installation of boilers and other pressure vessels. Boilermaker craftsmen also must carry out the testing and maintenance of these vessels.

Position title of the supervisor

As a supervisor in the craft of boiler making, your responsibility is to ensure the correct and accurate erection and maintenance of the all equipment such as pressure vessels and boilers. You will also be responsible for delivering all instructions to your subordinates and you will be guiding them in performing their job.

If any of the subordinate industrial craftsmen does not understand the assigned task, the craftsman or boilermaker can directly contact their supervisors for further details. All technical and mathematical aspects should be clearly understood by the subordinates before initiating the job.

History of the position

A boilermaker’s job in the twentieth century was simply fabrication in various industrial construction sites. Later the fabricator of high-end equipment such as boilers and pressure vessels was known as boilermaker. In this craft, the person involved needs to be highly trained.

Essential duties and responsibilities

The essential duties of the boilermaker include making a design of the product, preparing and developing all sequences, bending, cutting, shaping, welding and finally erecting the desired boiler. The duties also include using metalworking machines such as drill presses and electrical arc equipments, testing and finding faults and finishing the job. Depending on some of the situations, you may have to work on heights and will be operating some of the high voltage electrical equipments.

A boilermaker should be ready to work under extremely variable environments such as from extremely hot to extremely cold conditions. The industrial jobs will also include to work in chemical environment and may also be asked to work in shifts.

You as a boilermaker will be responsible for its design, development and erection fully and if you do not understand any of the instructions given to you, you should contact your supervisor and get details of the job. Your responsibilities also include getting the work done in time from your subordinates and you should also plan your work in coordination with other technicians and other department people. You should have excellent communication skills to deal with your co-workers. You should have good mathematical skills.

Position Specification

If you want to become a boilermaker you should have through at least a secondary school diploma with Math, Science and English as your credits. You should have gone through a course in blueprinting and welding.

Special Specification

You must go through apprentice training program training on the job as well as theoretical training before you actually go for the boilermaker certificate course. You also need to go through an examination for obtaining your certificate or diploma course only thereafter can you be successfully absorbed by any industrial construction or industrial fabrication unit.

Average Salaries

Average salaries in this craft are variable and most of the time the salary depends upon the qualification and experience. However, a boilermaker can get the salary in the range of $150 to $200 per day. As the experience and expertise of the boilermaker will go up the remuneration will also rise.
